Paying Down Debt: Snowball vs. Avalanche, Without Judgment

更新日: · 6 min · Beginner

Two respected repayment methods, one mathematically cheaper and one behaviorally stickier. Here is how to choose the one you will actually finish.

The shared foundation

List every debt with balance, APR, and minimum payment. Pay all minimums every month — missing one triggers fees and credit damage that dwarfs strategy tweaks. Every spare dollar beyond the minimums attacks a single chosen target.

Stop adding new balances to the cards you are repaying, or the math never catches up.

Avalanche: the mathematical route

Direct extra payments to the highest interest rate regardless of balance. For the same total payment, this usually produces the least interest and the fastest payoff in present-value terms. Its weakness is psychological: the first target may take a long time to vanish.

Snowball: the behavioral route

Target the smallest balance first. You may pay slightly more interest overall, but clearing an account in weeks rather than years creates a visible win. Research on real borrowers suggests behavioral effects can make snowball users more likely to finish.

When trouble is bigger than a method

If minimums do not fit your budget, interest exceeds your payments, or creditors are in contact, speak early with a reputable non-profit credit counseling service. AILICAI does not lend, negotiate, or recommend refinancing products — those decisions need licensed, personalized advice.

What is the difference between education and advice?

Education explains how a concept or formula works in general. Advice recommends what you personally should buy or do. AILICAI provides only the first, and suggests a licensed professional for the second.

Why are returns labeled hypothetical?

Because no one can know future returns, and showing a single smooth growth line can mislead. All projections here are simulations you control — not promises.
